What’s the Difference Between Marketing and Sales?
In every business, both Marketing and Sales play a major role in driving the revenue. However, a lot of people fail to understand the difference between the two. Some even go as far as to believe that both are the same and can be interchanged. In truth, each has its own significance in a company.

The biggest difference between sales and marketing is that the former is aimed at individuals or small groups, while the latter aims at the masses, i.e., the target audience of a particular business.

A lot of times, sales uses a personal approach in which the salesperson tries to persuade a lead to buy a certain product or service. This was commonly observed in cold calling which was easily the most prevalent sales practice back in the day. Even though many companies still deploy cold calling, the more advanced ones use other methods as well which include emails, social media, etc. In addition to that, technology is also used to target and nurture the leads before attempts at their conversion are made.

Marketing is essentially “understanding applied”. It\’s knowledge obtained from the sales teams and general market analysis applied on a large scale. So, instead of taking a different approach for every individual, it promotes a single message across big markets as a whole. Naturally, the communication is only one-sided here unlike sales in which the salesperson can understand the requirements of a potential customer on a more personal level and use their discretion to nudge them in the right direction so that they actually invest.

In many ways, marketing affects sales. If the public doesn’t recognize a product or why it’s better than the competition, they won’t respond well to the efforts of sales. Marketing also has a huge impact on a company’s brand which is quite important today.
