Is MBA a Good Option for an Average Student? Is it Worth it?

MBA is considered one of the best options for higher education. It is also a perfect gateway to the management side of the business and is thus ideal for those who have a technical background.

However, you must be careful when opting for an MBA program and make a decision only after due consideration because:

• MBA can be quite expensive. If you want a degree from a foreign university then it can easily cost you up to Rs. 50 lakhs. Even in India, you should expect to shell out as much as Rs. 25 lakhs which isn’t a small amount by any means.
• A standard MBA program spans 2 years. If it’s a full-time course, then it means you don’t get to work during this period.

Thus, you can see that enrolling in an MBA program is a big commitment. More importantly, you have to take the ROI into account too. For some students, it can be sufficiently high and for others, not so much.

Is an MBA the Best option for average students?

It’s commonly believed that an MBA degree can give a big boost to your career. However, the actual impact is greatly dependant on the institute you get the degree from.

Most of the top business schools including the IIMs select the students on the basis of CAT score which itself is quite tough. Thus, the students who get into these institutes are highly meritorious.

Students with average scores usually end up with average institutes. So, the question is- Is an MBA degree from one such school worth it? Well, unless the business school is sub-par and/or super expensive, an MBA program is usually a good idea. However, you should never pursue an MBA just for the sake of it. You must be willing to learn about finance and business, engage in extracurricular activities, sign up for seminars/workshops, etc. Only then you can make the most of your degree. Good luck!
