52% of SEZ Lands Vacant, Says Commerce MoS CR Chaudhary

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, CR Chaudhary, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry said that around 52% of the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) are presently vacant.
Chaudhary said out of the total allotted area of 45,629 hectares for 375 SEZs only 21,872 hectares have been utilized. He also said that developing an SEZ is a long process, and delay in the commercial operations can be possible for various reasons.
In the reply, Chaudhary also mentioned that in the total SEZ area combined, 93% of the land is barren/industrial/dry/waste, 5.28% is single crop, and 1.25% is double crop.
