Absence of Anchor Department Holds Back National Artificial Intelligence Unit

It was the month of January when the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced that an artificial intelligence center would be set up by July this year. However, the plan is stuck now as it’s not clear which department will initiate the same.

Previously, the then finance minister Piyush Goyal said that the government will set up a hub that will focus on nine priority areas in artificial intelligence. Think tank body NITI Aayog had also issued a Cabinet note through which it asked for ₹7,500 crores for 3 years to set up an AI framework.
