Banks not Liable for Customers Handing Over Money to Stranger

If the verdict of a recent case under the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission is any indication, you cannot hold a bank liable for giving money to a stranger in the premises.

In the particular case involving a State Bank of India’s branch, a woman had handed over her currency notes to a stranger inside the bank who volunteered to help by counting the notes for her. However, he cleverly put some of the notes in his pocket in the process.

While the district forum had found SBI guilty and asked it to provide a certain compensation to the woman sometime back, the state commission was not convinced of the order and dismissed it in the interest of the bank.
