Entrance Exams Coaching Centres Liable to Pay 18% GST

As per the Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR), coaching centres offering tuition for entrance exams are liable to pay 18% GST. This information came to light after an application was submitted to the AAR’s Maharashtra bench by Simmple Shukla Tutorials, a private institute that prepares the students of class 11th and 12th for major entrance exams in engineering and medical domains.
The GST regime requires the tuition and coaching centers to pay 9% CGST and 9% SGST i.e. a total tax of 18%. However, the applicant raised an argument that coaching centers being educational in nature should be provided tax-exemption.
