Free Spectrum to Railways Gets Strong Opposition from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel

Vodafone, Idea, Reliance Jio, and Bharti Airtel have opposed the government’s decision to provide premium 700 MHz spectrum to Indian Railways for signaling and Wi-Fi purposes. They said that the commercial value of the spectrum is massive and they stand to lose revenue as the government will offer the same to Indian Railways for free.
Reliance Jio said that Railways shouldn’t be given commercial services like voice and video communication, and Wi-Fi unless it obtains proper authorization under the Unified License. In the same way, Vodafone Idea said that spectrum for 4G and 5G services will be reduced if the government reserves 700 MHz band for Railways.
