Government Scraps Free Insurance for Train Travel
Effective from September 1, 2018, Indian Railways will not offer free travel insurance to the passengers.  People booking the tickets online now will have to choose to either opt-in or opt-out of the service.

A senior official from Railway Ministry said that Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) was offering free travel insurance to the passengers who booked their tickets online since December 2017. This move aimed at encouraging digital transactions.

The government hasn’t yet announced the new rates for the travel insurance for those who decide to opt-in.
