Minimum Wage Code Bill Gets Cabinet’s Clearance

Yesterday, the Union Cabinet gave the nod to the new wage code bill which will combine four labour laws and allow for a minimum wage all across the country.
The new Wages Code Bill, which is expected to benefit as many as 4 crore employees, will integrate the following laws:

  • Equal Remuneration Act, 1976
  • Payment of Bonus Act, 1965
  • Payment of Wages Act, 1936
  • Minimum Wages Act, 1948

The Bill will grant the Centre the power to assign a minimum wage for the different sectors in the country, which all the states will have to maintain.
Today, minimum wages are considered for only those employees who are earning less than Rs. 18,000 per month. However, the new Bill will cover the employees earning more than that as well.
