Modicare Health Insurance to Set Back Exchequer by Rs. 100 bn

“Modicare”, which is a government-funded health insurance scheme that follows the likes of “Obamacare” is touted as a public healthcare scheme that will cover 500 million Indians. However, Union health ministry and think-tank body NITI Aayog said that it will cost the exchequer as much a Rs. 100 to Rs. 120 billion. It also said that the central government will only cover 60% of the funding and the remaining 40% will have to be shelled out by the state governments.

Experts believe that the new healthcare scheme may not sit well with the states because of the big financial strain that it will put on them.
