Niti Aayog Says India Facing Severe Under-Employment, Not Unemployment

India’s Think Tank Niti Aayog said that contrary to the common belief that India’s growth has been “jobless”, the bad condition of employment is because of “severe under-employment” and not “unemployment”.

It said that according to the Employment Unemployment Surveys (EUS) of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), the rate of unemployment has been consistent for more than the past 3 decades. So, unemployment is not the main problem- underemployment is. So, there is a need for creating high-wage and high-productivity jobs.

According to Niti Aayog, unless we amend the current labor laws and create new ones as required, we cannot expect to change the current situation where low-wage and low-productivity jobs are in abundance.
