Political Parties Should Deter Offering Loan Waiver: Raghuram Rajan

Farm loan waiver shouldn’t be included in the poll promises of the political parties, former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has said. He said he has already written to the Election Commission that this issue should be removed from the table as it puts massive financial pressure on the states that have to undertake the loan waiver, and it hurts investment in the agriculture sector too.
Rajan said that there is a “fair amount of agricultural distress” and farmers certainly deserve more resources. However, whether offering loan waiver is the best option is questionable.
