Strikes Cost $1bn; General Motors Temporarily Lays Off 6,000 Workers

6,000 workers of the General Motors (GM) plants have been temporarily laid off in Mexico, following the labour strikes that disrupted the auto giant’s production. This is amid the absence granted to nearly 3,000 workers in Canada and Ohio.

A GM spokesperson said that the Union Automobile Worker (UAW) strike has resulted in a parts shortage that is disrupting their production lines. Furthermore, the strike of about 50,000 GM workers in Canada has cost the company over $1 billion.

The workers in Mexico, however, are expected to return to their jobs once the strike is over.
