Universal Basic Income Feasible Only if Welfare Schemes are Eliminated

According to the Chief Economic Advisor of India, Arvind Subramanian, the unique idea of a global basic income that can provide free money and reduce poverty is only viable if the existing welfare schemes are phased out.

Subramanian said that there are various social welfare scheme currently running in India, including kerosene and food subsidies, etc. even if they unorganized and crippled by corruption. However, they can’t be erased from the system just like that, as they have a strong political opposition. Thus, UBI already has one big obstacle to overcome first.
