What Is The Scope After Pursuing A Management Course In Human Resource?

People are the most valuable resource of any organization. Right from work force planning to employee exit, each aspect of the employee cycle is significant. While bigger organizations have separate departments for each human resource (HR) function, smaller organizations may employ an individual to perform all the functions.

A management course in HR is ideal for those interested in people interaction and understanding their psychology.  Here are some of the career paths one can pursue after this course.

HR Generalist
This is a great role to start with, as it provides good understanding and exposure to the wide gamut of functions in HR. You could start as an HR Executive, Management Trainee – HR, HR Assistant, HR Officer, etc. based on the company’s organization structure.

Roles higher in the ladder are HR Manager, HR General Manager, Vice President HR, etc.  At any point, based on your interest you can broaden your career to become a generalist. Alternatively, you can pick out one field of interest and specialize in it.

Talent Acquisition Specialist
Placing the right people in the right role is critical for every organization. Talent acquisition refers to the entire process of resource planning, attracting the right talent and selection of employees. Unlike common perception, hiring is only one part of this, and there are other parts to this role as well.

Usually, the first role most fresh graduates in HR land in is recruitment. This would involve screening resumes, scheduling interviews and conducting preliminary selection processes. Bigger companies have separate departments even for candidates’ background verification, which is a small part of talent acquisition.

Learning and Development (L & D) Specialist
Apart from talent acquisition, an organization’s success also depends on imparting necessary skills required to perform a job effectively. L & D is a broad function that is closely associated with key aspects of an organization such as performance appraisal, career development and strategic planning.

The role of an L & D specialist may involve organizing, scheduling and coordinating the entire cycle of training. Higher roles require identifying the training needs and delivering appropriate sessions with follow-ups.

Organizational Development (OD) Specialist
An upcoming field, OD requires a comprehensive understanding of business functions. Professionals with several years of industry experience would be preferred for this role. It demands working closely with the top management of the company to achieve its vision.

Some examples of OD interventions are policy development and implementation, downsizing, organizational restructuring and mergers and acquisitions. The interventions required would differ based on each organization’s status quo and vision.

Industrial Relations Manager
Organizations require good liaison between employees and management for productive work environments. Individuals who play this role will have to represent the voice of the management without compromising employee needs.

This is a challenging role as it may involve dealing with blue-collar workers, negotiating with trade unions and settling disputes amicably.

Based on one’s interest, there are several interesting opportunities to explore in the field of HR. Irrespective of the role you choose, approachability, decision-making skills and negotiation skills are some of the attributes that you can hone to become successful in this field.
