Has the evolution of social media robbed us of our privacy?

  • Every time we make a profile on a social media site, their base is constantly growing. Cyber criminals are targeting social network sites with increasing amounts of malware and online scams, honing in on this growing user base. Social Interaction – each action of a user can be used for good or bad online behaviour. Potential dangers – Identity theft | Sexual predators | Vulnerable Preteens and early teenagers | Stalking and Surveillance | Unintentional fame and Online victimization + Mob behaviour.
  • These sites make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. You may have wanted to share a life update with your loved ones. But in reality, you are sharing it with the world known and unknown.
  • Social networking sites encourage people to be more public about their personal lives. Because intimate details of our lives can be posted so easily, users are prone to bypass the filters they might normally employ when talking about their private lives.
  • Cyber attacks — a form of clickjacking dubbed ‘likejacking’ — was seen threatening Facebook users since the last few years; where the victim is tricked into clicking a link that then recommends the site on Facebook — even when they didn’t actively choose to “like” the site. The ploy isn’t part of an active malware or phishing attempt, but it certainly has the potential to be used by hackers to get into your system. And, Facebook clearly isn’t alone in the malware battle. Twitter has faced issues related to its shortened URLs and the spread of viruses — and we can be sure that both of these popular social media sites will remain prime targets for cyber thieves.
  • Organisations perform a background check on the Internet before hiring an employee. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.
  • Your every online move leaves cyber footprints that are rapidly becoming fodder for research without you ever realizing it. You are part of a research by some student at the other end of the planet.
  • The reason social network privacy lapses exist results from the humungous amounts of information that these sites process each and makes it  much easier to exploit a single flaw in the system. Features that revolve around social interactions like messages, invitations, photos, open platform applications etc. are often the avenues used to gain access to private information, especially in the case of Facebook.
  • Blurring line between effective marketing and privacy intrusion. Social activity is being used for remarketing needs to be monitored very closely by corporate policy.

How does social media not violate us of our privacy

  • There are privacy settings for each and every platform that can be tweaked  and personalized for everyone’s needs.
  • Social media gets the credit for us to keep in touch with our friends new and old, all around the world.
  • A lot of employees are hired through social media – as it is effective, personal yet not very personal.
  • Social media gives boost to businesses.
  • It helps you create awareness and spread a word about some issue. A message for help can be spread easily via social media.
  • It helps get in touch with big companies and express woes and get a solution – because a company doesn’t want negative publicity. A person can express their woes openly on social media and get help and support for the same from unknowns. eg – Ola, Vodafone and other companies.
  • It is easier to spread news. Nowadays people believe what they see on social media more than just news that’s spread via sms or whatsapp; as it is more reliable and supported by comments and evidence.
  • It has brought the world closer. People can now come to know what happens in the streets of other countries by just following people on social media around the world.
