Our Dean, Joyanto Mukherjee, reminisces Adam West’s remarkable contribution to epitomizing Batman and making it a household name.
When the news broke that Adam West had passed away, I shook awkwardly for a minute and sat down. ‘Batman is dead’, is what came to my mind. ‘How is that possible?’ For almost all the readers, Batman for you is Christian Bale and Ben Affleck and for a little older ones, it is Michael Keaton, George Clooney and Val Kilmer amongst many others (comic adaptions, etc). But Adam West was the person who brought it out on TV in the sixties and that is when Batman became Batman.
His style and suave dialogue delivery made him a legend in the cape. The ‘Bams’ and ‘Kapows’ were what made his fights epic in an age when there was no support from CGI and other enhancements. Adam lived as Batman and he did so because there was a belief which people had in the character he essayed. He stood for justice and the audience resonated that thought. Every Batman character after him, paid an ode to Adam as no one made Batman bigger and better than him. He was the first and in that same breath so is TSCMC.
As a media school, challenging the local school of thought is necessary. TSCMC stands for that challenge. The investment into kids is imperative. Making an individual shine on his/her own is what makes this space different. TSCMC stands for change and challenge. For two years on it has proved itself in a city which echoes academic belief and management style structural nonsense. The style here is anti- academic yet driven by industry practices and is the need of the hour. Adam West made Batman brilliant because the investment was into the individual who fought crime and not the concept of superheroes overall. TSCMC is doing the same.
On its completion of two years, a salute to the staff and vision of TSCMC. A heartfelt ‘Kapow’ to our favourite cape crusader whose character reflects our way of thought and future. RIP Adam — you shall be missed!
