Exclusive: Work like an entrepreneur in a company, says Ratan Kesh, Senior VP, Customer Service, HDFC Bank

Stating that working 24X7 is quite the norm in this sector, Mr. Kesh points out that the work culture at HDFC Bank is such that employees begin to consider home as an extension of work and the office space as an extension of home. This brings about a strong sense of ownership among employees. “Every employee thinks of himself as an entrepreneur who is creating something for the Bank. We all run our departments like that,” says Mr. Kesh.

In the video, Mr. Kesh also talks about how innovative thinking has helped companies excel in fields that are not their primary areas of expertise. “Which is the largest camera selling company in India? It’s not Canon, it’s Nokia! Which is the largest music selling company in India? It is Airtel. It’s not HMV,” he chuckles.

Quoting British baron Richard Branson, Mr. Kesh says management students can develop an entrepreneurial mindset by identifying what they like to do and convert that interest into capital.

Watch the video to hear Mr. Kesh talk about the evolution of the banking industry in India since HDFC’s entry in the sector in 1994, the importance of investing in technology to stay above the competition and the steps being taken by HDFC Bank to reach out to rural customers using innovative measures such as the ‘Bank in a Box’ concept.
