Tips and Tricks for Film Photography
September 06, 2018
Contrary to popular belief, film photography is not obsolete yet. It is actually doing incredibly well in the market as there is a huge demand for black and white photographs. However, it is more challenging than digital photography as the DSLR cameras offer a variety of tools to help you take the most stunning photos easily.
If you are trying to learn the basics of film photography, then the following tips can be of great help:
1. Minding the Light
When working with films, you have to be extra careful with the lighting. It is a lot easier to adjust the lighting on digital photos as we have a number of professional software for that. However, with film photos you have to manually lighten or darken different areas when developing the prints in darkroom. So to save time and effort on the editing end, make sure that you click the photos in proper lighting in the first place.
2. Learning Film Development
The best film photographers develop the films themselves. Although it is easier and faster to get it done by someone else, if you want to improve your work and learn the basic skills of the trade, then you must be willing to get your hands dirty.
Developing your own films gives you the knowledge about how the negatives are printed. You can also darken or lighten different sections of the images to develop them the way you want.
3. Mastering the Lenses
Different types of photos require different types of lenses. As a professional film photographer, you must have the knowledge to pick the right one for each shot. For instance, when you have to capture a large scene, you should go with a wide-range lens. Similarly, if you are more interested in making your subject the plot of the image, then a telephoto lens is the best choice.
