After SBI Merger, now Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank may Follow Suit

In a bid to improve the condition of the state-run lenders in the non-performing assets arena, the government is to start the next round of consolidation in which Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda are considered as ideal candidates.

A senior financial ministry official said that the government wants to have few large banks rather than many small banks. In that enterprise, it wants to start with the low-hanging fruits. So, Punjab and Sind Bank may be merged with Punjab National Bank. Similarly, Bank of Baroda can absorb some of the small banks in the Southern India. However, the idea is still in the planning stage and nothing is confirmed yet.
