Bank Data of 1 Crore Indians Being Sold at Dirt Cheap Rates

Investigating the case of an 80-year-old woman from South Delhi, who had lost Rs. 1.46 lakh from her credit card account, the police discovered a group that was selling bank account data of about one crore Indians at 10 or 20 paise per individual.

As the key culprit, Puran Gupta, was arrested the cops recovered the stolen data that contained credit card numbers, names of the card holders, DOBs, and mobile numbers.

Gupta said that he would typically sell the data in bulk, thus earning anywhere between Rs. 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per 50,000 records. This data was used by fraudsters who would try to convince the card holders to reveal OTPs and CVVs numbers and withdraw money.
