Banks' Asset Quality Degrades as Non-Performing Assets Expected to Rise

ICRA, which is one of the biggest independent investment information and credit rating agencies in India, said that asset quality in the Indian banking sector is declining if the new rate of Non-Performing Asset (NPA) generation is any indication.

The new additions to the NPAs during the third quarter of FY2017 were worth Rs 26,400 crore in contrast to Rs 1,36,000 crore during the nine months of FY2017, mainly because of a high number of write-offs in the last quarter. The annual rate of NPA generation also dropped to 4.1 per cent during Q3 FY2017 in comparison to the 10.7 per cent during Q4 of FY2016.
