China Behind 67% of Bulk Drug Imports in India in FY19

As many as 67.56% of the total imports of bulk drugs amounting to 2,405 million USD in FY19 was facilitated by China. In FY18, the import of bulk drugs from the country stood at 2,055 million USD that made for 68.68% of the total import.

Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda said that India imports bulk drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to produce select essential medicines. He also said that an umbrella scheme “Scheme for Development of Pharmaceutical Industry” has been prepared by the Department of Pharmaceuticals to boost the domestic pharmaceutical industry.
