Coal India Minefield Loses ₹2.7 Crores in 3.5 Hours After Protests Over a Goat’s Death
October 07, 2019
A trespassing goat was killed in an accident in the prohibited minefields of the Coal India unit, Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL). An outrage sparked among the locals in a nearby village in Eastern India, who expressed their anger by protesting against MCL.
This led to a halt in mining operations for three-and-a-half hours. The resultant loss in production was a shocking ₹2.7 Crores. The protests halted only after police intervention following complaints lodged by Coal India. MCL further added that people from nearby localities deliberately trespass to pick firewood and coal from the mining fields. Many even use prohibited areas for cattle grazing.
Spokesmen Dikken Mehra’s statement expressed surprise at harsh reality — In India, even a goat’s death can cost you millions.
