Demonetization, GST Helped Add 1.8 mn New Taxpayers: Centre

Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs A. Gitesh Sarma, who was addressing the ECOSOC Forum recently said that the government measures including introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST), and Demonetization brought as many as 1.8 million individuals under the Income Tax net.
Sarma said that the initiatives helped push digital payments over cash payments and brought uniformity in taxes (with GST). He said that because of these, the number of indirect taxpayers have increased by 50%.
