Electricity Requirement in India May Increase by 37% in Next 5 Years

As per the 19th electric power survey (EPS) report issued by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India will need 1,566 Bus (billion units) of power in 2022 which is 37% higher than the current requirement.

In the financial year 2016-17, the energy requirement in India was about 1,143 BU -a 2.6% increase from the previous year. CEA had estimated and provided the energy requirement for FY17 to be about 1,355 BU through its 18th EPS.

The forecast of high power requirements in the future is good news for the power industry which is struggling with a low demand. There are still about 33,000 MW of coal-based power plants in the country that don’t have long-term purchase agreements.
