Farmers Should be Taxed, Says Economist Bibek Debroy
April 29, 2017
Bibek Debroy, who is one of the members of the Policy Commission (government’s think tank), has proposed that the Indian farmers should be taxed on their income, basing it on the fact that in a country of 1.3 billion people only 37 million are the actual income tax payers.
Debroy’s suggestion may seem bold, but is line with the facts. The public finances of the country are known for being precarious, and in fact, the International Monetary Fund has estimated that tax revenues are comparable to just 17.7% of the gross domestic product.
Dharmendra Malik, a spokesperson for the farmers’ union said they support the proposal, granted the government takes measures to improve the income of the farmers first.
