FDI Comes into Affordable Housing Sector

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has started foraying into the affordable housing sector. It is believed that with proper regulation of REITs and 100% FDI in construction development along with timely delivery of housing units, foreign investors are venturing in the affordable housing market.

After the IL&FS default, many real estate developers are facing a liquidity crunch. Foreign investment can ease that crunch and help them get the funding that they require to ensure timely delivery of projects. FDI in affordable housing will give impetus to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, an initiative of the government to ensure Housing for All by 2022.
