Gold Hallmarking to Be Made Mandatory Soon, Says Ram Vilas Paswan
November 19, 2018
Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan said that the government is planning to make it mandatory for gold jewellery sold across the country to be hallmarked.
Gold hallmarking is the purity certification of the precious yellow metal. It’s regulated and governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) although it’s currently not mandatory for jewellery sellers.
Paswan said that BIS has set hallmarking standards for gold jewellery in 3 grades i.e. 22 carats, 18 carats, and 14 carats. He said the government is looking to make it compulsory soon.
