Government plans to provide safety for gig economy workers

The Government is planning to provide safety to gig workers due to the outbreak of coronavirus in the country.

Senior Officials ET spoke with said, “Labour ministry will launch a scheme which will provide social security, pension, provident fund, insurance to the gig workers”.

The move is going to help millions of people like small workers, taxi drivers, and delivery persons. These segments account for nearly 90% of the country’s 500 million labor force and do no longer fall under traditional employer-worker relations. The plan is currently pending with the standing committee.
