Here’s What Govt. Wants You to Do When You are Asked to Pay Service Charges

The next time you are asked to pay a service charge at a restaurant or a snack bar, you should move the consumer courts as per the recommendation of the Department of Consumers Affairs.

The department had issued related guidelines in April this year deeming slapping of services charges an “illegal” act.

According to a report, Department of Consumers Affairs secretary Avinash K Shrivastava said that that services charges should be voluntary and left at consumers’ discretion. The consumers have the right to deny service charges, although restaurants can fix their own rates.
