Income Tax Returns on the Rise Since PM Modi’s Black Money Drive

Since the note-ban, the government has taken a number of measures to tackle the problem of black money, as a result of which the total number of people who have filed income tax returns have increased by 95 lakh. This figure was mentioned in a presentation made for the revenue department’s review conducted on Tuesday.
The government aims at expanding the tax net, as currently, only slightly more than 1% of the total population is paying tax. However, in FY16 about 5.28 crore returned were filed through the internet, which is a 22% increase since the previous fiscal.
