Jan Dhan Yojana After Three Years

Announced by Narendra Modi on his first Independence Day after taking the duties as the new Prime Minister, the Jan Dhan Yojana was welcomed with open arms in the country. If the numbers are any indication, the scheme has been greatly successful. In the three years since implementation, the total number of accounts have increased by almost 3 times to 288 million from 104 million i.e. by the end of May 2017. Moreover, RBI data reveals that the average balance kept in the accounts continued to increase and peaked by the end of 2016. The total number of zero balance accounts also dwindled to 24% in 2016 from the 73.3% in 2014.
