Looking Back at Atal Bihari’s Key Reforms that Changed India for Good
The recent demise of ex-PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee has shocked and saddened many. He was considered as one of the best statesmen India ever had. Let’s take a look at some of the major economic reforms that his government brought when they were in power:

  • Vajpayee’s government played a key role in taking the country’s road and infrastructure to the next level through the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and the Golden Quadrilateral.
  • Vajpayee’s government enacted the Fiscal Responsibility Act which increased public sector savings from 0.8% of GDP in FY 2000 to 2.3% in FY 2005.
  • Vajpayee wanted to keep the government out of the process of running businesses for which he established a disinvestment ministry. Some of the most famous disinvestments include VSNL, BALCO, Indian Petrochemicals Corp.etc.
