No Coal Imports for Power Plants in FY18 Likely

About 12 million tons of coal was imported during FY16, which was about 25% less than the previous fiscal. This year about 25 million tons of coal import was expected. However, it is speculated that the actual figure would be zero, as the government power plants have decided to stop imports altogether.

According to Jayanta Roy, ICRA senior vice president, this fiscal Coal India is ready to meet the increased coal demand and thus we may not need to get coal from other countries. However, the situation with private power producers has not changed, which imported about 54 million tons of coal during the year.
