Tax Evasion Worth Rs. 15,047 Crore Detected by DGCEI

The Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence has detected excise duty and service tax evasion of total worth Rs. 15,047 in the last fiscal, which is about 25% higher than fiscal 2015-16 (during which the detected tax evasion was Rs. 12,112 crores). The intelligence wing of the finance ministry has also registered about 1,500 cases and arrested 13 tax evaders, compared to fiscal 2015-16 when the total number of registered cases were 1,150.

DGCEI Director RK Mahajan said that the officers had to travel several difficult parts of the country to nab the tax evaders, including the Naxal-affected regions.
