Telecom Sector Upset at Unchanged GST Rate

The chief telecom body of India COAI said that it’s unhappy that the GST rate for telecom services has been left unchanged at 18%. With several prominent members such as Reliance Jio, Idea Cellular, Vodafone, Bharti Airtel, etc. the Cellular Operators Association of India was seeking a lower GST rate of 5%.

Although the government has made a provision for claiming credit inputs to reduce the tax burden, the telecom industry is certain it won’t be of much help especially since it’s already in huge debt. Many stakeholders have also claimed that with the high GST rate, the telecom services are likely to become more expensive for the consumers.
