WhatsApp Likely to Launch Digital Payments Service by Next Month

Mobile messenger app WhatsApp may go live with an integrated digital payment service as early as next month, people aware of the developments said. If the plan materializes, it could give a major boost to the already growing digital economy.

WhatsApp is currently in the process of incorporating a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) channel into the app along with top banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and State Bank of India (SBI). However, it has already started to test a beta version of the feature with one of the banks.
