With Rs. 8,000 cr Budget, Railways to Revamp 40,000 High-class Coaches

Indian Railways has decided to refurbish about 40,000 coaches with modern amenities along with upgraded interiors at a cost of Rs. 8,000 crore. Moreover, it also plans to bolster the safety measures in the system by installing powerful couplers that can prevent capsizing during accidents. As per the plan, there will be newly designed bio-toilets, better seating arrangements, and refurbished interiors in the 40,000 coaches.

The retrofitting cost of one coach is estimated at about Rs. 30 lakh and the target of covering all the coaches is set to 5 years. A senior official from the Railway Ministry said that the government plans to complete the project by 2023.
