CO2 Emissions from Bitcoin Comparable to Vegas, Says Study

According to researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany who studied data like the IP addresses of Bitcoin miners, the virtual currency is accountable for around 22 megatonnes worth of CO2 emissions that are released every year. This is comparable to emissions in cities like Las Vegas and Hamburg.

The study was able to localize 68% of the Bitcoin network computing power is Asian countries, 17% in European countries, and 15% in the US. It also found that the annual energy consumption by Bitcoin is around 46 TeraWatt (TWh).
