Financial Inclusion Challenges Persist in Rural India Despite Progress in Other Sectors
December 12, 2023
Despite significant strides in sectors such as telecom, internet, and healthcare access in rural India, a recent report by Boston Consultancy Group highlights that comprehensive financial services remain a critical obstacle to economic advancement in this segment. The report identifies six key friction points that hinder financial accessibility in Bharat.
One major challenge is the low financial literacy among rural consumers, leading to 60% reliance on informal lending. The need for tailored solutions across products, processes, and policies is emphasized to unlock the full potential of this segment.
The report indicates that Bharat consumers aspire to save, but irregular incomes, unexpected expenses, and limited financial knowledge make it challenging. Comprehensive solutions are recommended to not only offer financial products but also help develop good saving habits and provide incentives for better financial behaviour.
Banking charges, costs associated with travel, and missed opportunities burden small savings, highlighting the necessity for easy and affordable access to banking services beyond traditional banks.
Access to formal loans is another challenge due to a lack of past credit history and fluctuating credit requirements. The report suggests developing tailored lending solutions with alternate data-based decisions, flexible interest rates, and repayment schedules to address Bharat’s specific needs.
The preference for cash-in-hand over insurance poses a hurdle. To boost insurance adoption, simplified processes, clearer terms, and guidance through local ‘Insurance Mitras’ are recommended, with banks playing a crucial role in facilitating access.
Lastly, limited awareness, understanding, hidden costs, and lengthy paperwork hinder the benefits of government schemes reaching Bharat consumers. The report underscores the importance of efficient communication, involvement of influencers, and simplified processes to broaden the distribution of scheme benefits.
