Google’s Fitbit Deal merger present test for competition

Google’s $2.1-billion securing of Fitbit would add wearable gadgets to the web giant’s hardware business. The deal, which Google hopes to close this year, is under scrutiny by the Justice Department’s antitrust division.

It additionally propels the ambition of Google parent Alphabet Inc. to extend in the health care sector by including information from Fitbit’s over 28 million clients. Google has hit cloud-service partnerships with hospital groups and signed a deal with Mayo Clinic to build new AI tools.

The deal, which Google hopes to close this year, is under scrutiny by the Justice Department’s antitrust division, as indicated by an individual familiar with the issue, and will probably experience a review by the European Commission.
