Healthcare Providers Applaud Ministry's Move Towards Health Insurance Regulation

The Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI) has commended the Ministry of Finance for considering the establishment of an independent regulator for health insurance. Discussions between the ministries of finance and health are underway, with a focus on realizing the IRDAI Vision 2047.

Representing a majority of private sector hospitals in the country, AHPI is also part of the IRDAI advisory for the healthcare sector. In an official letter, AHPI expressed enthusiasm, stating, “This is a welcome move as making healthcare available, accessible, and affordable has been a priority for the present government.”

Actively involved in the initiative, AHPI highlighted the rapid growth of private insurance penetration. Coupled with government-run insurance, it anticipates that India will soon cover 70% of the population, a crucial step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

AHPI proposed that the regulator, in addition to overseeing the private insurance sector, should also extend its jurisdiction to government-run insurance schemes like PMJAY, CGHS, ECHS, ESI, etc.

Aligned with the IRDAI Vision 2047, the government aims to achieve “Insurance for All” by 2047, ensuring every citizen and enterprise has appropriate life, health, and property insurance coverage. AHPI emphasized the need for restructuring government insurance schemes to encourage more tertiary-care hospitals to participate, enabling beneficiaries to access healthcare services.
