On World No Tobacco Day Doctors and Healthy Activists Demand High GST on Bidi

On this World No Tobacco Day, a group of doctors, healthy activists, and bidi workers demanded high GST rate on bidi to limit its consumption. They said that allotting a tax slab lower than 28% can increase the consumption of bidi and further worsen the public health and thus the economy in the country.

Dr Rijo John, who is a health policy analyst and an economist, said that by increasing the GST rate on bidi its consumption across the country can be reduced to a great extent, which is why the GST council and the government should seriously consider this.  He also said that at even 28% the tax difference would be negligible between the current system and the GST system.
