SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar Hints at Downsizing

This Thursday, State Bank of India (SBI) chairman Rajnish Kumar said that the bank may end the financial year with fewer employees than it started the year with.

Kumar said that with the sizeable client base that SBI has, a need for the human interface will continue to exist. However, he added, that if someone were to ask him that the number of employees that were with the bank during the beginning of the FY18 (which was 278,000) will remain the same, he would say “it’s unlikely”.

Kumar said that due to the bank’s efforts toward technological adaptation, some cost-effective measures are likely to be taken.
