Merger of Banks May Improve Efficiency, say RBI Researchers

Researchers at the Reserve Bank of India are of the opinion that India’s struggling banking sector could use more mergers. They said that public sector banks (PSBs) performed better than their private sector counterparts during 2005-2018 as they focused on adopting new technologies rather than increasing hiring. This suggests that more consolidation in the banking sector can be beneficial and explored, they said.
